Education and Outreach Assistant

The Block Island Education and Outreach Assistant provides support in all aspects of the Block Island Program. The Block Island Education and Outreach Assistant will assist in nature programs and staff the “Nature Hot Spots”; conduct trail maintenance and other stewardship activities; perform office duties; assist in scientific activities and biological monitoring.
The Block Island Education and Outreach Assistant role will include:
Staff “Nature Hot Spots” outreach program at different preserves around the Island sharing information about Block Island, the trail system, nature programs and the mission of conservation on Block Island. (50%)
Assist with education/outreach programs about local natural history, conservation heritage, and The Nature Conservancy’s mission on Block Island. (20%)
Perform trail maintenance, invasive plant removal, and monitor preserves for appropriate use. (10%)
Assist with biological and legal monitoring and other scientific activities on Nature Conservancy preserves. (5%)
Clean and maintain Nature Conservancy facilities, including the Ocean View Pavilion, and other duties as assigned. (15%)
Ability to work long hours, including weekends.
Work involves several disagreeable elements and/or exposure to job hazards where there is some possibility of injury.
Work requires occasional physical exertion and/or muscular strain.
Make day to day decisions as delegated by supervisor; may work under limited supervision and supervisor.

We are looking for conservation-minded and excellent communicators with proven ability to deal with the general public in a friendly, outgoing & professional manner. This is a 12-week position beginning on June 8, 2026 through August 28, 2026. There are three positions, 30-35 hours per week. Position salary is $18/hour. Housing is available.
What You’ll Bring:
HS Diploma and 1 year experience.
Ability to obtain related licenses or certifications such as first aid, CPR, and driver’s license.
Experience operating landscaping tools in a safe manner.
Experience in Customer Service.
Organizing skills.
Desired Qualifications
Excellent communication, presentation and interpersonal skills.
Multi-lingual skills and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience appreciated.
Experience or knowledge of natural systems. Knowledge of natural sciences, including but not limited to ornithology, entomology, botany, etc. skills.
Experience on boats.
Knowledge of Block Island.
Ability to complete tasks within assigned timeframes, possibly in the absence of supervision.
